VIRGINIA BEACH, VIRGINIA: The United Jewish Federation of Tidewater and Simon Family JCC’s annual celebration of Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’Atzmaut, is a family-friendly festival that includes activities for all ages. Children, teens and adults can participate in the “Israel@75 Challenge” in the month leading up to April 30th, where participants can complete Israeli trivia challenges for the chance to win prizes for pickup at the event.

An Israel celebration wouldn’t be complete without the opportunity to taste the robust flavors of authentic Israeli dishes. Come hungry and sample Israeli hummus, falafel, sfenj (a Moroccan donut) and more! Additionally, adults can enjoy beer and wine in a beer garden, and visitors of all ages can go for a camel ride, purchase items in the Shuk (the open-air marketplace), play the Israeli dodge ball game known as Gaga, and more. Guests can also make their way through an “Israel Passport” while exploring activities that can be found in various cities and regions in Israel.

The featured guest this year is Ben Peter — whose grandfather, Rudi Weissenstein, captured more than a million photographs of Israel’s history, currently housed at Tel Aviv’s PhotoHouse. Ben and his grandmother, Miriam, set out to save The PhotoHouse from demolition, which was documented in a film, entitled “Life in Stills” (screening on Wednesday, April 26 at 7:30 PM at the Simon Family JCC). Meet Ben Peter on April 30, and be sure to take time to explore the incredible history his grandfather caught on camera, in a campus-wide exhibit that will be on display as a part of Tidewater’s celebration the 75th anniversary of Israel’s statehood from April – June.

This Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebration is FREE and open to the entire Tidewater community, its families, and friends of all faiths. For more information, please visit JewishVA.org/IsraelFest
